Good Words

Friends, my playlist is about to get a major Mama makeover. Elliott and I have never been the kind of parents to keep our preferred music away from our son. Sure, some of the content got watered down once little man’s ears started to pick up on words, but we never fully converted our music of choice over to a Kidz Bop-approved variety. Over the last year or so, Brooks – our son who is now five years old – has taken a special interest in singing along with me to the songs that are on my playlist. We sing in the car, he sings along with the music while I work out or while we run down back country roads. It’s kind of become our thing. When we get to the songs that are filled with uplifting messages – messages that reinforce our faith or encourage self-confidence – I always say, “Listen, buddy! These are good words.” After a few months of me reminding him to pay close attention to the lyrics in certain songs, Brooks has now started to ask me, “Mommy, are these good words?” wh

Healthy Product Round-Up - Summer 2018 (Updated!)

Hi friends! If you have followed along here at Every Third Day for a while, you know that I posted my very first Healthy Product Round-Up earlier this summer. Over the summer months, Elliott and I have continued to try new and different healthy products, and I'm excited to share some of what we've loved with you!

In the spirit of true authenticity, I also want to share the things with you that haven't worked for us. I never want to discourage you from trying a new product or company, but I always want to be completely truthful about what we are actually using. These Round-Ups are not ads or any kind of sponsored content; they are simply my attempt to share my trials, errors and current healthy favorites with you. Discovering healthy products can be a bit of an experiment, agreed? So below are a few current favorites in our home...

#1. Nutpods

I have been working really diligently to eliminate almost all dairy from my diet. This is no small feat, friends. I love cheese as much as the next girl. And my first cup of coffee each morning - with my dairy-filled hazelnut creamer - used to be a sacred daily ritual. Cutting out dairy had been a goal of mine for a while, but I struggled for a long time with finding the discipline to do it.

When I finally committed to it, I tried several different kinds before I finally found Nutpods. It was the only plant-based creamer that I could find that made a hazelnut flavor - bonus points that it tastes great, blends into the coffee well and produces the right color and consistency! (You die-hard coffee drinkers who love cream will know what I'm talking about.) I had honestly given up hope that I would find a dairy-free creamer that I loved, but I'm super excited to tell you that this one saves the day. It is difficult to find in stores in my area, so I typically order online (link above).

PS - If you've been considering cutting back on dairy as a part of a healthier lifestyle, I would really encourage you to try it for 30 days. I truly believe you will be able to tell a difference in how you look and feel.

#2. Daily Harvest

If you follow @austinfitnessproject on Instagram, it's no secret that we have been big fans of Green Blender. It was our first experience with a smoothie ingredient delivery service, and we absolutely loved it. We both noticed a difference in how we felt by incorporating fresh, organic smoothies into our diets over the course of several months.

But several weeks ago, Green Blender announced that they would be suspending smoothie deliveries for a few months, due to some changes they were making to their company. So we have been without fresh smoothies for a few weeks - which I recognize is a total first-world problem - but I have been itching to find a replacement.

After some online research, we decided to try Daily Harvest. The pricing structure is similar to Green Blender, so assuming all goes well, we will probably continue to order two boxes each month. The primary difference between the two companies is that the ingredients come frozen from Daily Harvest, where Green Blender's were always fresh and were meant to be stored in the fridge. (At first, I was turned off by the idea of frozen ingredients, but truthfully, it may work out for the best. There were many weeks that we struggled to use all of the fresh ingredients from Green Blender before they went bad, and on a few sad days, we had to throw away fruits or veggies that went south before we got around to using them.)

Definite upside to Daily Harvest: all of the smoothie ingredients come pre-chopped and in a cup that you can return your smoothie to once it's blended. The branding and packaging are adorable (I'm a sucker for details like that - big bonus points), and they even included a sheet of Daily Harvest magnets in our first box. So far, so good. I'll keep you posted on how we like them - and don't forget to follow along in real time on our AFP Instagram!

3. Suja Organic Kombucha

I confessed in my last Round-Up that we were a bit late to the kombucha party and were scared to try it for a long time. But we are now fully on board and keep our fridge stocked with various flavors at all times! The first brand we tried was KeVita, which we still purchase occasionally, but after trying a few kinds over the summer, my current favorite is Suja. I try to drink a serving of kombucha daily, around mid-afternoon, as an alternative to yogurt. With literally billions of probiotic cultures, it's a great way to maintain good gut health without the dairy.

4. Beautycounter Overnight Resurfacing Peel

This product launched over the summer, and it's being called Beautycounter's highest performing product to date. I personally can't say enough good things about how well it works. It is a leave-on peel, meaning that you apply a thin layer on your face once you've washed it at night, let it absorb for about five minutes, follow it with a moisturizer and then let it stay on all night. I guarantee that when you wake up in the morning, your face will feel softer, and you will see a reduction in fine lines, dark spots and redness. It's like magic in a bottle. I use it 2-3 nights per week.

As with all Beautycounter products, you can feel great about the fact that this is made safer, without scary toxins and chemicals that are found in so many personal care products. This particular product is made with 15 botanically-derived acids that clear away surface skin cells without irritating or over-drying your skin. It's also at a great price point and will last for months. Game changer, y'all.

5. Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant

In full disclosure, I haven't tried this one yet...but it's being delivered any day now and I'm so excited to give another natural deodorant a try. If you read my last Round-Up, you know that I have been using Native deodorant and wanted for it to work so badly. But the breakouts under my arms just haven't cleared up, and I've finally accepted that something in the formula just isn't mixing well with my skin.

I posted about this on Instagram recently and got some awesome recommendations for other companies to try, including Primally Pure. I already had my eye on them because of their social media posts, and after hearing that it worked so well for some of the folks I know, I decided to start here. I purchased the charcoal formula - charcoal is a great detoxifier for the skin, and this deodorant is also made with a smaller amount of baking soda (which I think may have been what was irritating my skin).

Just in case, I'm also going to be a bit smarter going forward to hopefully avoid more of these breakouts. After more research, I've learned that I should be cleaning my armpits well after every workout, and I should never apply the deodorant immediately after shaving. (Ideally, I should shower/shave at night and apply the deodorant the next morning.)

I will keep you guys posted on how this one goes - and don't forget to follow along in real time on Instagram, either @elizaustin or @austinfitnessproject. Finding our heathiest, best selves is a never-ending work in progress, so let's keep the conversation going! I would love to hear about the products that you're loving as well - comment here or let's hang out on Instagram.

As always, cheers to living our best lives and finding our best selves.
