Good Words

Friends, my playlist is about to get a major Mama makeover.

Elliott and I have never been the kind of parents to keep our preferred music away from our son. Sure, some of the content got watered down once little man’s ears started to pick up on words, but we never fully converted our music of choice over to a Kidz Bop-approved variety.

Over the last year or so, Brooks – our son who is now five years old – has taken a special interest in singing along with me to the songs that are on my playlist. We sing in the car, he sings along with the music while I work out or while we run down back country roads. It’s kind of become our thing. When we get to the songs that are filled with uplifting messages – messages that reinforce our faith or encourage self-confidence – I always say, “Listen, buddy! These are good words.”

After a few months of me reminding him to pay close attention to the lyrics in certain songs, Brooks has now started to ask me, “Mommy, are these good words?” when he hears …

Healthy Product Round-Up: Summer 2018

Happy first official day of summer, friends! To celebrate, I've compiled my very first Healthy Product Round-Up, a list of healthy products that I'm loving for my family and myself so far this season. If you follow our fitness account on Instagram (@austinfitnessproject), some of these will come as no surprise to you.

Let's get a few disclaimers out of the way up front. First, the products I include in these round-ups, or talk about on social media, aren't always going to be the cheapest. It's not that I don't like saving money - who doesn't?! - but I have a couple of beliefs that run deep when it comes to how I spend my money. Number one, you get what you pay for. Number two, the truest reflection of your priorities is your bank statement. My family and I have made a commitment to living the heathiest life possible, which has come to mean spending a bit more than we used to on healthy food and safer products. But in turn, we now spend less on other things. It's a balance. If something is a true priority, you'll discover what you can shift to make it fit into your life. And if you have an extenuating circumstance in which you truly don't have the means to make something a full-blown priority...start small. Every positive change you make makes a difference. (And I'll always do my best to let you know when there's a deal running on a product I love - especially on Instagram, either @elizaustin or on AFP).

Disclaimer number two: Yes, I am a consultant for Beautycounter. (If you want to know why I made the decision to join this company, you can read more about that here.) But other than that, I have no affiliation or partnerships with any other companies. I'm a brand new, baby blogger. Maybe one day there will be companies wanting to advertise on this site in various ways...but today ain't that day, friends. The point is, the products I recommend to you will ALWAYS be ones that I'm currently using and loving myself. I want this space to inspire folks to live their healthiest lives inside and out, and I'm super passionate about sharing the things that are helping my family do just that.

#1. GreenBlender

I first started to see sponsored posts for GreenBlender on Instagram around the time we started AFP, our IG fitness account. I knew I wanted to start incorporating healthier foods into our daily diets, and I wasn't sure yet how to effectively make that happen. Truthfully, I started by saving the smoothie recipes that GreenBlender posted on its Instagram account, with the hopes of finding all the ingredients myself during grocery shopping trips. I quickly realized that many of the incredible ingredients found in the GB recipes aren't exactly easy to locate in the average grocery store. And while I'm sure I could have found them if I had taken the time to search every grocery store and farmers market in my area...well, quite frankly, I work fulltime and I have a family, and I just didn't have the time, energy or patience to do that.

So Elliott and I decided to subscribe to GreenBlender. And I have to tell you, the first time that box of goodness showed up on my front porch, I knew we had made the right decision. Each box comes with organic, fresh ingredients - some common fruits and veggies, and some incredible superfoods that we've never even heard of - that are pre-portioned to be exactly what you need to make five smoothies each week (each smoothie makes enough for two people). Each box also comes with a list of the smoothies for the week, including the full recipe and summary/health benefits for each.

A few tips that are helpful to know before you subscribe: 1. You can customize your box. If there are recipes that you already know you won't like, you can sub them out for alternates that are listed each week. 2. You can skip delivery weeks, but you have to do it manually on the website. (Elliott and I receive two boxes per month, on average.) 3. Make sure you are making the smoothies consistently, especially if you subscribe each week. It's easy to get backed up if you have a busy week and don't take the time to make the smoothies...which can lead to stockpiling smoothie ingredients in your fridge. And speaking from experience...it's a little soul-crushing to have to throw out any of that beautiful, organic produce once it's gone bad. Use it up!!

2. Beautycounter's Countersun Mineral Sunscreen

Hands down, the most popular items I've sold since starting with Beautycounter are the Countersun sunscreen products. And after using them on my own family, I totally get it. We're hooked too!

Most importantly, you can feel great about using this (and ALL Beautycounter products) on yourself and your family because it doesn't contain harsh chemicals that are harmful to you and the earth. Many sunscreens contain oxybenzone, which has been linked to the collapse of the world's coral reefs, but this new collection does not. The Countersun line also contains UVA, UVB and blue light protection - so you're triple covered!

Bonus: the application of these is a dream. The mist features a continuous spray that goes on white (so you can see where you've sprayed), then rubs in clear. The face stick is so convenient (especially for kiddos!) and doesn't leave behind a greasy residue.

Beautycounter doesn't currently make a deodorant, so I started searching for a good one when I began our switch to safer personal care products. I had heard several recommendations for Native, so I signed up. (It is subscription based, though that's not required.) I'll be honest - I was nervous. I expected to spend the first few weeks of adjustment as a stinky, sweaty mess without a harsh antiperspirant. But great news, friends! It was just fine!

A helpful hint that I wish I had taken the time to research before I started using it - don't shave under your arms and then use the deodorant immediately following. About a week or so after I started using Native, I developed a breakout under my arms. Thinking it could have been some sort of weird armpit detox, I Googled it and found a recommendation online to shave under your arms at night and then apply the deodorant the next morning to avoid potential breakouts. I've been doing this for the last few days, and it's already better. Plus I have this whole new peace of mind about not slathering my armpits with aluminum and sketchy parabens - WIN/WIN!

Y'all, Elliott and I have never been so excited to be wrong about a healthy product. We were so convinced that kombucha was going to be disgusting. I had prepared myself for it to be thick, chunky and thoroughly unappetizing. I could not be more thrilled to share with you that it's DELICIOUS. (All of you smart, brave people who have been on the kombucha train for years are rolling your eyes so hard at me right now. That's ok. Sometimes I'm a slow learner...and the Austins aren't known for being the trendiest folks in the world. You'll learn to love us anyway, I promise.)

I found KeVita drinks on sale at Publix a few weeks ago and took a chance. What I thought was going to be thick, chunky and awful was actually refreshing, crisp and fizzy. It actually gives me the satisfaction of having a soft drink, without making me feel like crap after I drink it. The positive effects of kombucha are believed to be many - better digestive health, weight loss, and potentially cancer-fighting, just to name a few. Each KeVita drink has enough for two servings, so you can share or save some for later! So far we have tried this pineapple peach flavor as well as the ginger - both are so. friggin. good.

As with anything I post, please reach out with comments or questions. I hope at least one of these products has inspired you to work something new and healthy into your life this season. Cheers to spending the summer being our healthiest selves, inside and out!
